Unable to penetrate Byron's armor, Spawn teleports himself inside and rips his way out, reducing the villain to a bloody head.

He portrays the ancient warrior in the worst possible light, preferring instead to feature his own fearsome actions. When a kick from Spawn's horse sends Violator flying, something snaps inside him and he unleashes a gout of mystical fire. The Violator cackles in triumph over the smoking form of his fallen foe.

The Clown's story continues. Medieval Spawn survives the Violator's blast, but he is horribly disfigured. Even in this state, however, he is able to best Violator with the help of his living suit's imprisoning tendrils. The Violator's severed head is hoisted aloft as a grisly trophy of their demonic battle. Ironically, the woman he sought to protect from the Violator is sickened by Spawn's true form and flees in flight.

CIA chief Jason Wynn gave Al Simmons to Malebolgia in exchange for the fearsome substance Psychoplasm. Meanwhile, Heaven is worried is because Spawn has defeated Angela, and they decided to create a soldier to avenge this loss. In a supreme stroke of irony, Wynn is selected, and receives the Elemental Fire of Heaven, transforming him into the Redeemer. The soldier of light returns to Earth determined to destroy Spawn once and for all.

Spawn cannot find peace. First he discovers the remains of his human body; then Malebolgia torments him. He's transported to Simmonsville, a town built from Psychoplasm and Al's memories. When the Redeemer attacks, Spawn flees to his alley. Sustaining grievous injuries, Spawn is knocked unconscious as the Redeemer prepares to deliver the killing blow.

The homeless distract the Redeemer while Spawn recovers. As he fights, Spawn gradually realizes that his foes powers are being depleted. With a final blast, he downs the Redeemer, who is transported back to his heavenly creators. Afterward, Spawn returns to Simmonsville and destroys this reminder of a happier time. He accepts that sorrow and loneliness have become his fate.

Spawn encounters Houdini, an agent of a mysterious confederation of magic called Overlap. He teaches Spawn how to use his uniform more effectively, which comes in handy immediately when they are attacked by a street gang. After the threat is dispatched, Houdini enlists Spawn in a demon-destroying mission.

Houdini and Spawn attend a conference that has been taken hostage by a madman with an atomic bomb. As Houdini watches the bomb's countdown, he realizes that he's been double-crossed -- the original plan was to destroy Spawn in the blast, but Houdini is being sacrificed as well. At the last minute Houdini channels the explosion into another reality.

A Mafia hit man delivers a warning to Spawn that Antonio Twistelli is out to get him. Spawn, unfazed by the threat, slams the thug into the wall and vows to pay Twistelli a visit very soon. Meanwhile, Jason Wynn is returned to Earth after his stint as the Redeemer and viciously reasserts his authority in the CIA.

From the files of Mob accountant Joe Sakic, Spawn learns that the Mob believes Terry is Spawn, and they're sending a new and improved Overtkill to kill him! Terry is in a world of trouble -- framed by the CIA and forced into a midnight rendezvous with the Mob in order to get his kidnapped wife and child back. Spawn decides to help, but is stopped by Twitch.

Terry, mistakenly targeted as Spawn, stands no chance against Overtkill. Luckily, Spawn escapes from Twitch in time to help his old friend. He removes Terry from harms way, while his cape intercepts one of Overtkill's laser beams. Twitch, in hot pursuit, arrives on Spawn's trail just in time to fire a well placed shot in Overtkill's ear, disrupting his programming.

The homeless prevent Sam and Twitch from arresting Terry and Spawn. Wanda and Cyan had not actually been kidnapped, but Terry is still wanted by the Mob, CIA and police. Spawn threatens each of Terry's antagonists with the release of ruinous documents if they continue to pursue him. Thanks to Spawn's bluff, Terry is cleared.

Tremor, a new force on the street, arrives in Spawn's alley, looking to expand his turf. Spawn launches a preemptive attack, luring in Tremor with a decoy, then choking him with his chains. Tremor than reveals that his real foe is Twistelli. It turns out that Tremor had been a normal man who Twistelli transformed into a hulking brute, and now he's hell-bent for revenge.
