Writer Brian Schirmer will be signing the the first issue of his comic Fairlady and giving a presentation about worldbuilding in science fiction on Wednesday, April 24 at 5:00.
In Fairlady, published by Image Comics, after posing as a man to join the army, Jenner Faulds returns home to The Feld for a new start as a "Fairman" — a specially licensed private investigator. As the only "Fairlady," Jenner gets stuck with the overlooked mysteries, but finds that the smallest cases hide the biggest secrets. Brian says, "I took a love of '70s and '80s shows like Magnum, P.I. and The Rockford Files, poured that into a big bowl of Middle Earth, and added dashes of China Miéville, Michael Moorcock, and Mignola, and Barbarians Conan and Thundarr."
In a 30-minute presentation at 5:30, Brian will discuss research, rules, and rulebreaking for creating an immersive sci-fi setting. "It's easy to invent a fictional world. What's difficult is making that world believable on its own terms, making it behave according to a set of rules you establish as its creator," he says. "Finding that logic — even if it's a 'dream logic' — is key, and sticking to it, essential."
