February at Image Comics was a month full of new story-arcs, red-hot launches and a roster of books and talent that proves just how locked in readers are right now. The Energon Universe once again led the charge, with Transformers #29 (Robert Kirkman & Dan Mora), G.I. Joe #19 (Joshua Williamson & Andrew Milana), and Void Rivals #27 (Robert Kirkman & Andrei Bressan) continuing to keep readers on the edges of their seat, while G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero still stands tall 325 issues later as a testament to Larry Hama’s run.
Horror fans showed up in a big way for Exquisite Corpses #10, where a desperate mother is caught between two of the world’s deadliest assassins, a paramedic fights to save her small town, and a burnout risks everything to protect two innocent kids, as James Tynion IV and Michael Walsh push their bestselling horror sensation even further with Jordie Bellaire and breakout artist Marianna Ignazzi adding new layers to the chaos. Gothic terror also made a huge impact with the debut of Universal Monsters: Phantom of the Opera #1, a horrifying new vision of the classic tale in which violent crimes rock the Paris Opera House. Tyler Boss and Martin Simmonds deliver a shocking twist on a story readers think they know.
Then, there was the launch that turned everybody's head. The debut of D'ORC #1! The lovable half dwarf, half orc armed with a magically violent shield has stumbled into a never-ending war between Light and Dark, burdened with a doomsday prophecy that guarantees every elf, goblin, dragon, Ice Giant, Trauma Llama, and at least three other unpronounceable creatures want him dead, and yes, there is also a chicken.
Add in the savage world-building of Skinbreaker #6 (Robert Kirkman & David Finch), plus powerhouse mainstays like Spawn #372 (Todd McFarlane & Brett Booth) and Geiger #21 (Geoff Johns, Gary Frank, Brad Anderson & Rob Leigh), and February becomes a month to remember.
