October was a month full of milestone moments and big comic book energy that Image Comics fans have come to know and love. King Spawn #50 hitting a major moment reminded everyone why Todd McFarlane’s creation still hits as hard as it does. Then Transformers #25 turned heads thanks to the new creative team of Robert Kirkman and Dan Mora, stepping onto the Energon Universe stage and giving the series a bold new direction. Invincible Universe: Battle Beast and Exquisite Corpses kept their spots as must-reads with zero signs of slowing down, and Skinbreaker held strong with a killer second issue that proved the momentum is still rolling. Readers came out in full force for a special issue of James Tynion IV and Martin Simmonds’ Department of Truth with #0, revealing an all-new mystery (and an Elvis back-up by Scott Snyder and Joshua Hixson didn’t hurt either). October felt big, fast, and loud in the best ways possible.

There was just as much momentum on the collections front, with a mix of big archive drops, fresh new voices, and prestige hardcover releases. Transformers Compendium, Book 2 set the pace, giving readers a massive tome of Autobot & Decepticon history. G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero Compendium, Book 2 wasn’t far behind, showing how strong the appetite remains for Larry Hama’s classic run. Newer series like Bug Wars, Vol. 1 and Hyde Street, Vol. 1 pulled in readers looking for something unexpected, while the Universal Monsters’ The Mummy hardcover and the landmark All-Negro Comics collection offered two very different but equally compelling reasons to add something new to the shelf. And with fan-favorite staples like Department of Truth, W0RLDTR33, Eight Billion Genies, and Paper Girls all making appearances, October’s book lineup gave readers plenty of reasons to keep reading, collecting, and discovering what they may have missed the first time around.
