The i Word: Frank Barbiere on Violent Love & Akira Toriyama [Podcast]

Welcome to The i Word, the official podcast of Image Comics, hosted by David Brothers. In creator-owned comics, the creator is the real star, and the goal of the podcast is to not just talk comics with one creator at a time, but to give you a chance to see what influences them, too. For the first half of the show, we'll talk about their comics work. We'll discuss their process, collaborators, upcoming work, and other things related to their books. After that's done, we'll switch gears and talk about something they're passionate about, be it sports, video games, movies, or obscure b-sides from an ultra-specific microgenre of music. This week, we're speaking to Frank Barbiere, co-creator of VIOLENT LOVE with Victor Santos. Barbiere is a big fan of Akira Toriyama, creator of Dragon Ball Z.

VIOLENT LOVE is a classic story: girl meets boy, boy meets girl, they fall in love, and then they embark on an unforgettable crime spree. Barbiere and Santos are playing with romance and crime in this story, and the first issue gets off to an explosive start. Barbiere is a huge fan of Akira Toriyama, a master of action and comic storytelling, and creator of Dragon Ball, one of the biggest comics franchises of all time.
