I remember Kris saying that none of the series of Shadowline are meant to be infinite, so, assuming sales are good, how long (issue-wise) is Emissary supposed to last?
Hopefully a long-ass time! |

Originally it was slated as 12 issues. I believe that is still the goal. _________________ "Stylistically excessive"

Yeah, well, unfortunately sales dropped precipitously between issues 1 and 2 (by well over half).
So, while the folks who are reading seem loyal, there just does not seem to be enough support for the book to keep it going past issue #6.
I'm starting to believe that any book with my name on it is cursed.

That's just crazy talk!
(Jim, that drizzly Northwestern weather has already gotten to you ... come back to Southern California where it's nice and warm.) |

This book deserves so much more love than it's getting.
Sigh... |

You guys think of every going Graphicnovel route only with this series?
I'd hate to see this series go away. |

Sales are not good enough to make that financially viable.
A color GN would cost upwards of $30,000 and that's not to mention creator fees.
At this point we're hopeful that Volume One: Revelations sells well and kicks up some dust so we can maybe revive.
No one wants to get to the finish line more than us (that is Chris, Juan, Kris and myself).

Ever thought of doing what Stephen King did? Release something under a different name just for shits and giggles? |

I don't think you understand. There are LESS than 3,000 people reading this title. And it drops by about a hundred every month. That's NOT ENOUGH to pay the creative team to keep the book going. We eliminated the inker already to keep the book going. Jim stopped taking out the Image fee after issue 2 to keep the book going (it's his creation, he can do that). We switched writers after #3 to keep the storyline top-notch. We solicited all the way through issue 8, hoping on a wish and a prayer that we could keep the book going.
Does that make it more clear?
Trust me, no one is more pissed off than the fine folks who were working on this book. We had a good thing going, and all we did was make the biggest effort possible to keep it alive. Why is no one BUYING the damn thing?? _________________

Cause they are stupid-heads.
Emissary is one of the more thought provoking books on the shelves (racks? spinners?) right now in my opinion-- maybe people are afraid to think? The reaction to Jimmie's CBR piece seems to point in that direction. |

It does sadden me, because when all is said and done it's not just the readers.... but the retailers who have lost faith. Image, as Kris points out, has done all - and MORE above the call of duty to get this book to readers.
But I think even those who like it are finding it less and less because retailers are not putting it on the shelves. They only order what readers ask for. If readers don't speak up, then retailers don't know there's interest. I know retailers got it hard. After all, they have to sell thousands of books, not just a few.
Still, one would hope the rising tides would lift all boats, not just the yatchs and cruise liners.
But advertising doesn't work enough, the Internet is a closed loop, reviews and good praise doesn't move anyone... damn, what's a person to do? Is it all really just a lucky crap shoot?
It's been said before, but I wonder if long-life books that are hits today would STILL succeed if they were launched in today's market? Would STRANGERS IN PARADISE get enough orders in today's industry? BONE? USAGI YOJIMBO?
Has the price point and the massive amount of titles on the shelf hurt us more than helped? If Emissary is any indication, I don't know what to say. Juan's art is great, the story concept is spot on, and folks have praised it in review after review.
It would be nice if comics had the equivalent of Sickel & Ropert, or Rotten Tomotoes. Some type of... authority that would command respect and help spur sales.
For too long people looked at Wizard Magazine for that inspiration. Long ago, folks who got a mention in Wizard saw a bump in sales. But Wizard is not the make-it, or break-it force it once was.
And every person online has a blog, news, review site. We're all equal now...
So why can't I get all my Emissary???? GRRRRR!!!! _________________ "Stylistically excessive"

I barely managed to pick up today's issue. My LCS didn't put it into my sub even though it's on the pull list and they had only two copies on the shelf, one of which was supposed to be in my sub. So sad. _________________ Comics • Last.FM • Movies • Books • CDs |

I'm really sorry to hear this.
It's always sad to see books like this bite the dust.
I hope that something changes soon. |
